Deployment
Both armies moved into position. The Runesmith led the Longbeards while the Great Shaman placed himself in the Savage Orc mob.
Turn 1 - Dwarfs
The Dwarfs stormed forward at the sight of their mortal enemies, eager for the chance to settle old grudges in hot blood! The Engineer carefully sighted the cannon on the Skullberstaz, fired the war machine and one Savage fell to the cannon ball. A huge cheer went through the Dwarf ranks - first blood!
Turn 1 - Orcs and Goblins
Unimpressed by the Dwarf shooting, the whole Orc army advanced. The Snotlings piloting the Pump Wagon were so caught up with the spirit of the Waaagh that they drove the wagon so far forward that it disappeared off the field!
(We checked the rules afterwards (with the help of the guys at Da Warpath (http://www.da-warpath.com/) and realised that we had made a mistake - it should have halted at the table edge but as I rolled 3 sixes it seemed appropriate to have the Snotties pump like crazy and take their wagon right off the board!)
The Goblins in the chariots loosed their bows at the warriors in front of them but only one Dwarf fell to the arrows. A Doom Diver was thrown into the air, and high over the battlefield his gaze fell on the Iron Breakers. He dove down directly at the unit but at the last moment a gust of wind caught his wings and he crashed down just behind the Dwarves, who didn't even deign to glance at him.
Krashnakh concentrated and a ball of green energy shot towards the Runesmith, but as the spell came closer one of the runes on his armour glowed brightly and the spell dissipated. The Shaman angrily tried to cast the Foot of Gork on the warriors but he had lost his concentration and the spell fizzled out.
Turn 2 - Dwarfs
The Iron Breakers saw the mocking faces of their mortal enemies and couldn't hold back any longer. With cries of hate they charged the Night Goblins who immediately loosed a ragged volley of arrows that, more by luck than judgement, managed to strike down one Dwarf. The Dwarves grimly tried to close the distance between themselves and the Goblins but they were just too far away and they came panting to a halt. Then the ranks of the Night Goblins opened and the madly grinning Gitz shoved out two Fanatics! One didn't have enough momentum to reach the Dwarves but the other whirled through the regiment and crushed both Ironbreakers in his path! The other Dwarves gripped their weapons tightly and swore to Grungni that they would catch the Goblins next time!
The Warriors and the Longbeards moved cautiously forward while the Thunderers tried to take their revenge on the Night Goblins with their muskets, but only two Goblins fell. The cannon boomed again, but as only one Orc fell the Dwarves began to doubt themselves - had their technology failed them?
Turn 2 - Orcs and Goblins
Krashnakh called the charge and all the chariots and the Savage Orcs raced towards their enemies!
The Engineer paused, coolly drew his musket and shot a goblin between the eyes before continuing to load the cannon as if nothing had happened. The body fell between the wheels of the chariot which came to an abrupt (and unplanned) halt as the wheels bumped over the mortal remains of the unfortunate goblin!
The cannon was too far for the second chariot and even the Savage Orcs stumbled over the uneven ground and couldn't reach the Dwarf Warriors. Only the last chariot reached its goal, with the faces of its crew turning rapidly from triumph to worry and finally to stark terror as they realised that they had to fight the Dwarfs on their own!
On the right flank, the Mangler Squigs, now completely insane with rage, reached the Longbeards and scythed through the startled Dwarfs, biting off heads and squashing limbs with their monstrous bodies. The Dwarfs dived for cover but only the Runesmith and the command group survived the attack!
The Pump Wagon, driven by the slightly sheepish-looking Snotlings, came back onto the battlefield and promptly crashed into the Ironbreakers as a Fanatic whirled behind the Dwarf unit. The other changed direction abruptly and headed directly for the surprised Night Goblins! Two were unable to jump out of the way in time and were crushed by the whirling maniac before he throttled himself with his own chain in the wood.
As an aura of green Waaagh Energy shimmered around Krashnakh, he tried again to attack the Runesmith with Brainburstin' Orc Magic but once again the Dwarf drew on the power of his runes and the spell was nullified. Then the Shaman's eyes began to glow as he prepared to attack the remaining Longbeards with the Gaze of Mork, but the natural magic resistance of the Dwarfs shrugged of the magic!
Now screaming in frustration, Krashnakh invoked the uncontrollable power of Gork (or perhaps Mork) and a huge hand picked up the central chariot and set it down behind the Longbeards. He roared at the sky in triumph that one of his spells had pierced the resistance of the Dwarves, but then he had to pay the price...the green aura exploded as he lost control of the magic! As the energies threatened to overwhelm him, his warpaint glowed and the explosion was reflected into a pillar of green light which rose into the heavens, leaving the shaman unharmed. Gork (and Mork) were surely with the Orcs today!
The Doom Diver catapult launched a Goblin directly at the Thunderers and the cackling loony smashed right through the unit, leaving six dwarves dead and broken on the cold ground. Unfortunately the Night Goblins found this so hilarious that they couldn't aim properly and all their arrows went wide!
The Pump Wagon crushed three dwaves with its spiky roller. Shocked but determined not to give an inch, the Iron Breakers fought back, managed to damage the Wagon and prepared for a further round of combat.
On the other side of the battlefield the chariot and its crew could only kill two Clan Warriors before the angry Dwarves took the machine completely apart with their hammers!
Turn 3 - Dwarfs
The Warriors and the remaining Longbeards charged the Savage Orcs and the Night Goblins respectively but once again the distance was too far for the short legs of the Dwarfs.
The remaining Thunderers discharged their muskets at the still laughing Night Goblins and took some satisfaction at seeing two of them topple to the ground. The Dwarf Cannon had also found its range and a cannon ball bounced all the way through the Savage Orc mob leaving four corpses in its wake.
On the right flank neither Iron Breakers nor Snotlings were able to harm their foes, although the Dwarfs were able to swing towards the Pump Wagon to bring more axes in contact with the enemy!
Turn 3 - Orcs and Goblins
With a mighty Waaaagh! the whole Orc army attacked. This time there would be no escape for the Dwarfs!
The engineer shot again at the chariot but this time in vain - the scythed wheels mowed down all the crew and the remaining Goblins danced in triumph on the cannon barrel.
The Savage Orcs attacked the Dwarf warriors with bestial rage and six dwarves died under stone axes and clubs. In return the Dwarves felled three Orcs with their hammers, but as two were saved by their warpaint the Dwarves seemed to sense that the fight was lost. They turned to run but were cut down by the frenzied Orcs before they could start to flee!
The other chariot crashed into the Longbeards and the musician and the standard bearer died instantly. The Runesmith took a wound from a Goblin spear but clove the wielder's head in twain with his axe. The Dwarves braced their feet against the cold ground and fought grimly on...
Now completely out of control, the Mangler Squigs raced up the hill and careered into the Thunderers, wiping the unit out to the last Dwarf!
As the Night Goblins reached the Iron Breakers, the surviving Fanatic suddenly turned around and swung straight through the roiling melee behind him! Two Dwarfs and two Goblins died under the enormous ball and chain and the Pump Wagon was reduced to matchwood. The shocked Dwarfs were only able to cut one of their enemies down and although the Night Goblins were unable to pierce the Dwarfish armour, the
sheer mass of bodies threatened to overwhelm the Dwarfs. But in the face of their mortal enemies the Iron Breakers steadied and fought determinedly on.
Turn 4 - Dwarfs
The Dwarves had shown iron courage in the face of monstrous Squigs, screaming Doom Diver Goblins, whirling fanatics and overwhelming odds but in the end it was too much, even for the hardened veterans of a thousand battles.
The Runesmith managed to kill another Goblin but the pressure of the attack in his rear and the sight of his troops dying around him overwhelmed the Dwarf and he was cut down with the Longbeard Champion as he turned to flee. Although neither Goblins nor Iron Breakers were able to harm their foes, the sight of their Runesmith being cut down and the press of the Goblin bodies in front was just too much for decimated unit and they also broke and ran, outpacing the pursuing Goblins.
