Deployment

All the Beastman characters set up in the Bestigor deathstar
and the other Ungor Raider unit waited in ambush. The Goblin
Wolfriders used thier vanguard move to advance on the right.
Spells:
Great Bray Shaman - Death - Caress of Laniph, Soulblight,
Doom and Darkness, The Fate of Bjuna

Bray Shaman - Shadow - Pit of Shades, Melkoth's Mystifying Miasma

Bray Shaman - Beasts - Pann's Impenetrable Pelt
The Orcs - Piercing Bolts of Burning, The Fate of Bjuna,
Foot of Gork, Hand of Gork, 'Eadbutt, Fists of Gork

Turn 1 - Die Donnergrollen

Rolling a six, the Ungor appeared on the field right behind
the Orc Shaman, who however only had time for a grunt of
surprise before the fanatics came whirling excitedly out of
the Night Goblin mob. The unwary Ungor were all pulverised
as the Fanatics went through the unit as if it hadn't been
there before disappearing off into the distance.
As most of the Beastmen spells were out of range, the only
attempt was Doom and Darkness which was easily dispelled
by the Orc Shaman.

Turn 1 - Waaagh Vrork

With a mighty Waaagh! (what else?) the Orc army began to
advance. A Hand of Gork on the Giant was dispelled, and the
Beastmen were forced to use a dispel scroll to protect the
Shadow Shaman from an 'Eadbutt.

At the last the Shaman tried to summon the Foot of Gork
but there wasn't quite enough Waaagh energy left. The
Goblins shot their arrows completely wild.

Turn 2 - Die Donnergrollen

The Chariots manoeuvered to counter the Orc threat as the
Shamans prepared their magics for an sorcerous attack!
The Fate of Bjuna on the Mangler Squigs was dispelled
but the Orc Shaman couldn't prevent Soulblight and the
Caress of Laniph being cast on the frenzied Squigs, which
fortunately (for them) shrugged off the attack. The Shadow
shaman's last act was to cast the Pit of Shades which was
countered by a dispel scroll.

Turn 2 - Waaagh Vrork

The Manglers crashed through the Beastmen lines, killing the
Ungor Raiders and leaving one smashed and one seriously
damaged chariot behind them, as the rest  of the Orc army
began to encircle the Bestigor Deathstar.

A Fireball on the damaged chariot and the Foot of Gork was
dispelled but the Orc Shaman summoned Gork's Hand to move
the out of control Mangler Squigs to threaten the Bestigor as
a stray arrow wounded one of the crew of the undamaged chariot.

Turn 3 - Die Donnergrollen

As the Bestigor faced off against the Giant and the Black Orcs,
the Shadow shaman failed to cast the Pit of Shades and the
Fate of Bjuna was dispelled. The frenzied squigs managed to
shrug off the Caress of Laniph.

Turn 3 - Waaagh Vrork

As the Night Goblin mob began to advance, one Goblin elbowed
another who promptly swung his bow at the first Goblin, only
to miss and hit another in the face! The advance instantly
ground to a halt as the Ladz used the opportunity to settle
old scores despite the Orc Shaman's threats.
Giving the Night Goblins up as a bad job for this round, the
Shaman ordered the Giant, the Wolfriders and the Chariot to
charge the damaged Beastmen chariots as the Manglers
whirled towards the middle of the field. The Wolf Riders weren't
able to close the distance but the Giant and the Wolf Chariot
 both reached their enemies.
Trying to ignore the squabbling Goblins, the Orc shaman called
on Gork but his Hand was dispelled by the Bray Shaman. Appealing
once again to his savage Gods, the shaman summoned Gork's
Foot which stomped twice directly onto the Bestigor unit with
uncanny (if not supernatural) accuracy! A scroll of protection
and the Lichebone Pennant afforded the Beastmen some protection
but 12 lifeless bodies were left on the cold ground as the shaman
screamed in triumph.
The Goblin chariot crashed into its Beastmen counterpart and
instantly destroyed it while the Giant thumped the other chariot
so hard that he drove the squashed remains deep into the earth
before he followed up and ran off the table.

Turn 4 - Die Donnergrollen

The Bestigor herd, surrounded on all sides, tried to break out
of the trap they were in by charging the Black Orcs but it was
a long shot (double 6) and they ground to a halt a long way
before the Orcs.

The Pit of Shades was dispelled with total power although the
Shaman couldn't prevent Soulblight and the Mystical Miasma
being cast on the Black Orcs. The Mangler Squigs
survived Laniph's Caress without ill effects.

Turn 4 - Waaagh Vrork

The Mangler Squigs rampaged through the Bestigor, killing
seven as the afflicted Black Orcs backed away from the Beastmen.
The Orcs chose not to cast any magic.

The Squig Hopper Riders directed their mad, if not insane, mounts
towards the Bestigor and found both lower level shamans
on the flank of the Beastman herd. They managed to strike down
one Night Goblin and his mount but the remaining Squigs ate the two
shamans alive! Shaken but resolute the Beastmen stayed in the fight.

Turn 5 - Die Donnergrollen

Embroiled in combat with his unit, the Great Bray Shaman cast
Soulblight on the Orc Shaman but lost control of the spell,
wounding himself and leeching power from the winds of magic.
The Orc Shaman dispelled Laniph's Caress and the Fate of Bjuna.

In the combat in the middle of the field, 3 warriors fell on both
sides and the last Squig Hopper turned and fled with the Bestigor
close behind him.

Turn 5 - Waaagh Vrork

The Shaman bellowed "Waaaagh" at the top of his voice and
practically all of the Orc army charged the Bestigor, only the
Giant failing to make it.

The Wargor and the Bray Shaman managed to kill four Goblins,
bust as four Bestigor fell to the impact of the chariot and the
rest were cut down by the gleeful greenskins, they knew their
doom was upon them! The Bray Shaman was felled by the heavy
axes of the grim Black Orcs and, surrounded on all sides, the
Wargor died defending the Beastman Battle Standard.
The Orcs were victorious!
Waaaaagh!
The Orcs win 20:00

Harghaz Söhne (Dwarfs) vs Waaagh Agnak (Orcs) approximately 1200 points.

This battle was part of our ongoing campaign - for details see my other blog. The Dwarfs were slightly outnumbered by the Orcs and an Orc victory would have seriously damaged the Elf/Dwarf Alliance...

Deployment

The hill with the vegetation was impassable. The Thain set up with the Clan Warriors and the Goblin Big Boss with the Trolls. The Goblin Shaman got Gork'll fix it and Sneaky Stabbin' and the Warboss drew Soulblight and Shield of Thorns.

Turn 1 - Waaagh Agnak

The Orc army moved cautiously forward as a shrieking Goblin from the Doom Diver catapult completely failed to hit the Clan Warriors.

Turn 1 - Harghaz Söhne

The Dwarfs moved forward to counter the Orks as the cannon took a shot at the Trolls, wounding one.

Turn 2 - Waaagh Agnak

The Orks continued to advance, using the cover of the hills. The Doom Diver missed the Dwarfs again.

Turn 2 - Harghaz Söhne

As the Dwarfs dressed their lines, the cannon turned towards the Warboss and propelled a charge of grapeshot directly at him. One shot pierced his armour, but his Luckstone glowed briefly and absorbed the power of the shot, leaving him unharmed!

Turn 3 - Waaagh Agnak

Frustrated at the cautious pace of their advance, Vark and his Blooddrinkas decided to show the Dwarfs how Orks should fight and with a cry of "Let's Get 'Em!" they burst over the hill and charged the Clan Warriors, but the charge ground to a halt far from the weapons of their foes.
Determined to destroy the hated cannon, Agnak charged directly at it. A shot from the Engineer's pistols wounded him but he ignored the pain and scythed all of the Dwarf crew down in one flurry of blows!
The Goblin Shaman put Gork's curse on a unit of Thunderers, but couldn't control the power of the Waaagh flowing through his head. The Goblin's eyes glowed green as the irresistable force threatened to explode his brain. He managed to control the energies but was left with a blinding headache and wasn't able to cast any more spells in the battle.
One of the Goblin charioteers shot a Thunderer down as a flying Goblin flew with a dismal shriek over the Dwarf's heads and completely off the battlefield.

Turn 3 - Harghaz Söhne

Seeing the hulking forms of the Trolls in front of them and a chance of a glorious death, the Slayers charged directly at the monsters. Fire spat from the mouths of the Thunderers' muskets, but Gork's curse was still effective and only one Orc fell.
In combat the Goblin Big Boss completely failed to even hit his enemies and was wounded by an axe in return. The Slayers wounded the Trolls three times but the flesh closed up and the wounds healed before the Dwarfs were torn apart by the ravening monsters.

Turn 4 - Waaagh Agnak

With a mighty Waaagh, the Orcs charged at the Clan Warriors as their Warboss slammed into the rear of a unit of Thunderers.
The Doom Diver catapult finally managed to hit something and killed three Dwarfs from the Thunderer unit on the Orc right as the Orc Big'Uns crashed into the stolid Dwarfs. The Orc ferocity however owed much more to enthusiasm than skill as only two Dwarfs fell to the Orcs' Choppas before the heavy hammers of the Dwarfs left five Orcs lifeless on the ground! The bellowed curses and the ominous presence of the Orc Warboss, who had hacked down one of the Thunderers, kept them in the fight...but for how long?

Turn 4 - Harghaz Söhne

Seeing the Orcs wavering, the Runesmith and the Thunderers charged into combat. Leading by example, the Runesmith personally cut down two greenskins who could only fell one Dwarf before four more Orcs were struck down. This time they were unable to stand and fled, only to be followed and cut down to an Orc by the triumphant clan warriors whose pursuit brought them into direct contact with the Pump Wagon!
Bellowing in frustration, the Orc Warboss hacked down three Thunderers. As the rest fled, he growled in satisfaction as he slaughtered the running Dwarfs.

Turn 5 - Waaagh Agnak

The Trolls charged directly at the Thunderers through a hail of musket balls but although they were unharmed they couldn't close the distance.
All the Goblin units concentrated their fire on the other Thunderer unit but the only casualty was the Doom Diver catatpult which tore itself apart as the crew pulled it back too far!
The Clan Warriors quickly reduced the Pump Wagon to splinters and turned to face the Orc Warboss.

Turn 5 - Harghaz Söhne

With a mighty roar, the Clan Warriors charged the Warboss as all the Thunderers discharged their weapons, killing a Goblin but otherwise leaving the Orc army unharmed.
The Warboss bellowed a challenge which the cowardly Thain refused to accept! In his frustration Agnak's choppas scythed down five dwarfs but a hammer struck him causing another wound - this fight wasn't nearly finished yet.

Turn 6 - Waaagh Agnak

The Trolls charged again at the Thunderers through another hail of shot. One brute was wounded by a musket ball but he shrugged off the injury. The Goblins and the chariot charged the other Thunderer unit whose shooting was more effective - 2 Goblins dropped and the others decided they had better stay where they were and the charge ground to a halt, although the chariot crashed into the flank of the Dwarfs.
Still locked in combat with the Clan Warriors, the Warboss tried to cast Shield of Thorns but the magic was immediately dispelled by the Runesmith!
The Chariot and its crew only managed to kill two dwarfs (Note - I rolled a one for impact hits and needed to kill three Dwarfs to break steadfast) and remained locked in combat. The Trolls however slaughtered nine Dwarfs for no loss and tore the Veteran apart as he turned to run!
The Warboss bellowed another challenge and contemptuously beheaded the Veteran who had stepped forward to challenge him.

Turn 6 - Harghaz Söhne

The chariot and the Thunderers remained locked in combat with both sides unable to cause any casualties.
The Warboss's challenge was finally answered by the Thain. The contest ended with the Thain receiving a deep wound but still standing, and the Warboss's resolve wavered as he realised the Dwarfs would not be defeated today! Turning from the combat he flew away on his carpet.
There would be another day....
The battle ended in a draw, 12-08, with the advantage to the Orcs.
I had to think about what went wrong in this battle - up to the charge of the Big 'Uns everything was going reasonably well, and then the Boyz turned out to be a bunch of muppets and were cut to bits by the Clan Warriors and everything went downhill.
There were some really annoying things in this battle - I could mention the Doom Diver completely failing to hit anything for three turns and then exploding in turn 5, or the unbelievable overrun from the Clan Warriors to get them into combat with the Pump Wagon (Groll rolled double 6 and he needed it!), or even the failed charge of the Trolls in turn 5 (I rolled a 3) or the failure to break the last Thunderer unit with the chariot (one more casualty would have seen them testing on a 4 instead of being steadfast.
On the plus side, my Warboss performed brilliantly, personally killing 20 Dwarfs, and the Trolls did what they do best with gratifying ferocity. It's just a pity they were slowed up by the Big Boss - but there was no other way of leaving my Warboss free and keeping the brutes from being stupid.
At the end of it, the Big 'Uns should have caused (according to the law of averages) just under 9 casualties from the Dwarf Unit in 2 rounds. An average set of dice rolls would have broken the Stunties and an above average set would have wiped them out. The Big 'Uns would have then overrun into the Runesmith  and won me the battle. In fact they only registered 3 kills and got cut to bits.
In Warhammer, close combat is where it's at and you can't win a battle if you lose the most important combat! I take my hat off to Groll, who did pretty much everything right, and will try and find some Orcs that can actually hit their enemies for the next battle...

  • RBT Repeater Bolt Thrower

  • Total: 6 points

Deployment

The Elf General stood with the Swordmasters and the Noble with the
Battle Standard led the Spearelves. The Elves drew Fulminating Flame Cage.
The Orc Waaaghboss drew Pann's Impenetrable Pelt and Curse of Anraheir
and he and the Battle Standard Bearer joined the Goblins. The Shaman
drew Sneaky Stabbin' and Gork'll Fix it.

Turn 1 - Die Flussauenwache

In the face of the Bolt Thower, the Goblin Big Boss quickly tossed
back his toughness potion, ready for anything the Elves might throw
at him!

Unfortunately not quite ready enough...the Swordmaster Champion
activated his Ruby Ring of Ruin and even the effects of the Toughness
potion and the Charmed Shield couldn't prevent the fireball from wounding
the Goblin. The Bolt Thrower then shot a volley and one missile took the
Goblin directly in the throat! The Reavers shot a volley of arrows at the
Doom Diver and a well-aimed shot struck down a crew member.

(My opponent rolled a disproportionate amount of sixes this round :( )

Turn 1 - Waaagh Agnak

With unusual, if not unnerving efficiency (I actually didn't fail an animosity
or stupidity test in the whole game), the Orc line moved forward.

My Battle Standard Bearer also had the Ruby Ring of Ruin but promptly
rolled a double six and it melted down to slag after roasting only one
Swordmaster. A lucky arrow from a goblin cut down another before
a screaming Doom Diver crashed into the Swordmasters...and completely
failed to kill anyone.

Turn 2 - Die Flussauenwache

The Elf Infantry stolidly held their ground while the cavalry threatened
the Orc war machines.

The Flame Cage on the trolls was dispelled but a well aimed fireball
severely damaged one of the chariots and then the Bolt Thrower finished
it off. An extremely, if not supernaturally accurate volley of arrows from
the Reavers cut down the rest of the Doom Diver Crew. (I was getting
a six phobia at this point).

Turn 2 - Waaagh Agnak

Ready to bravely sell their lives (or better, someone else's if they could
manage it), the goblin chariot and the pump wagon crashed into the
Ellyrian Reavers, mowed elf and elf steed alike down and didn't leave
a single survivor.

Having lost practically all of their effective ranged weapons, the Orcs
and Goblins advanced cautiously while the Trolls moved carefully forward
(was that a glint of flame somewehere in the Elf lines?)

Another Swordmaster fell with a Goblin arrow through his eye.

Turn 3 - Die Flussauenwache

The Swordmasters swivelled and dressed their ranks to face off against
the Trolls. Another attempt to cast the Flame Cage on the stupid beasts
was dispelled, and four Goblins were cut down by bolts and fireballs.

Turn 3 - Waaagh Agnak

Determined to break the stalemate, the Orc Warboss charged out in
front of his Boyz, bellowing insults and daring the Elves to come
and fight him! He strengthened himself with Pann's Impenetrable Pelt,
but Gork'll Fix it and the Curse of Anraheir were dispelled by the Elves.
Reverting to their usual standard of archery, not one Goblin arrow
landed anywhere near an Elf.

Turn 4 - Die Flussauenwache

The disciplined Elves ignored the ranting Warboss and faced off against
the Orcs. The Flame Cage on the Trolls was dispelled once again and
five Goblins fell to bolts and fireballs.

Turn 4 - Waaagh Agnak

The Warboss ran so close to the Swordmasters that his spittle landed
on their armour as the Orc army moved to outflank the Elf Infantry.
Once again the Warboss cast Pann's Impenetrable Pelt on himself
but this time he lost control of the spell and the magical backlash
wounded the shaman. Visibly unimpressed at the fate of his minion,
he carried on insulting the elves as two more Swordmasters fell to
Goblin arrows.

Turn 5 - Die Flussauenwache

Not wanting to get any more Orc spittle on his armour, the Elf Noble
charged the Warboss as the Swordmasters moved against the Trolls.

A Fireball scorched the remaning chariot but the magic had now run out and the ring needed recharging
before it could be used again.

Three more Goblins were cut down by Elf bolts.

The Elf Noble swung his sword, charged with the Death magic of Khaine
(killing blow) at the frothing Orc Warboss, but the elves had used all their
mojo in the first two rounds and the only hit failed to wound. In return the
Orc cut the Elf down with two bestial blows!

Turn 5 - Waaagh Agnak

The Orc Big 'Uns saw their chance and charged into the flank of the
Swordmasters with a mighty Waaaagh!!! as the shaman cast Gork'll
Fix it on the Spearelves.

The two Swordmasters on the flank cut down three Orcs before they
themselves were bludgeoned to the ground. The Elves tried to hold
against the charge but the fury of the Orcs was too strong and they fled
off the field with the Orcs at their heels! (The Elves needed a 5 on their
break test).

Turn 6 - Die Flussauenwache

Desperate to save something from the battle and thirsting for revenge
for his compatriot, the noble in the Spearelf regiment ordered the
charge against the Warboss.

The "twang" of the Bolt Thrower sounded for the last time and one
last Goblin fell with a bolt through his dark heart.

Cursed by Gork, the Elf spears could not hurt the Warboss as he cut
down an Elf with contemptuous ease. The ranks of the massed Elves
threatened to overwhelm him, but he drew on the power of the Crown
of Command and stayed in the fight, snarling his defiance!

Turn 6 - Waaagh Agnak

Whooping and bellowing, the hungry Trolls at last entered combat
as they crashed into the flank of the Elf unit, supported by the last
chariot.

On the other side of the field the decimated Goblins saw
their chance for revenge and charged the Elves in the other flank
as the Orcs came back onto the field, looking for fresh foes.

Gork'll Fix it was dispelled by the Elves but Anraheirs Curse on
the Elves and, crucially, Sneaky Stabbin' on the Trolls got through.

As the Goblins entered the combat, three masked and cloaked assassins
sprang from their ranks and attacked the Elf noble, but two tripped
and fell against each other and the last one couldn't touch the agile
elf as he cut down two Goblins with as many strokes of his blade.

The other Elves speared 2 Goblins and wounded a Troll before the
full wrath of the Waaagh broke upon them!
The Warboss cut down three Elves, the chariot and its crew four and
no less than 19 Elves were ripped apart by the ravening trolls.
Stunned by the fury of the attack and no longer possessing the advantage
of numbers, the decimated Elves turned to flee but were cut down by
the victorious Orcs before they could move!

The Orcs had won the battle!

Waaagh!

Warriors of Chaos vs. High Elves, 1000 points

This was my first ever battle with the Chaos worshippers and (at least for this battle) they exceeded my expectations, although my opponent was very unlucky in his first turn - I'm sure the next battle will be a lot harder. Note that the High Elf army was chosen from the 7th Edition army book.

High Elves vs. Warriors of Chaos

Overview

High Elves

General: Kvothe

  • M Mage
Level 1, Silver Staff, Lore of Metal
  • SoH 7 Swordmasters of Hoeth
    Full Command
  • LSG1 15 Lothern Sea Guard
    Full Command
  • LSG2 20 Lothern Sea Guard
    Full Command
  • GE Great Eagle
  • RBT Repeater Bolt Thrower

Warriors of Chaos

General: Khazgar

  • CS Chaos Sorceror
Daemonic Mount, Lore of Fire, Dispel Scroll, Dawnstone, Scaled Skin
  • CW 17 Chaos Warriors
Halberds, Mark of Khore, Standard, Musician
  • CH 5 Chaos Hounds
  • GC Gorebeast Chariot
    Mark of Khorne
  • SoK 3 Skullcrushers of Khorne
    Ensorcelled weapons

Deployment

The Elf mage set up with the rear Sea Guard unit and drew Glittering
Robe and Transmutation of Lead.

The Chaos Sorceror received Fulminating Flame Cage and Fireball.

Turn 1 - Warriors of Chaos

As the Chaos army surged forward, the Sorceror gestured at the Great
Eagle and bars of fire materialised out of thin air, wounding the beast
and holding it in place as it dared not touch its fiery cage.

Turn 1 - High Elves

As the High Elf army moved to counter the Chaos threat, the Mage
attempted to cast Glittering Robe on the Sea Guard which was
dispelled by the Chaos Sorceror.

Stung at the failure of his magic, the Mage miscast Transmutation of
Lead onto the Skullcrushers and the spell was cast with total energy.
A dimensional cascade opened up, dragging the Mage and 9 Sea
Guard into the warp!

Although shaken by the loss of their General, the Bolt Thrower shot
down four Chaos Warriors while a well-aimed arrow from the larger
Sea Guard regiment managed to wound a Skullcrusher.

Turn 2 - Warriors of Chaos

The Skullcrushers scented the blood of the Elves and, bellowing oaths
to Khorne, crashed into the Sea Guard regiment, whose arrows could
not wound them.

The Chaos Hounds bounded up the hill to take on the crew of the Bolt
Thrower as the rest of the Chaos Army rounded the central crag.

The Chaos Sorceror's attempt to cast a Fireball on the Swordmasters
was dispelled, but with an evil grin he immediately cast Flame Cage
which the High Elves' mystical defence could not block. Three warriors
died and as the rest turned to run two more charred bodies fell to the g
round until the spell finally ended.

The combat on the hill ended in a stalemate as neither the Hounds nor the Elf crew could wound their opponents.

Although a spear thrust managed to find a chink in the armour of one of
the Skullcrushers, the frenzied Khorne worshippers cut down 14 Sea Guard
in retaliation. As the survivors broke and ran, the victorious Skullcrushers
crashed into the remnants of the second Sea Guard unit.

Turn 2 - High Elves

As all the fleeing elves rallied, the Great Eagle charged the Gorebeast
chariot in an attempt to buy some time for the Elf army to reposition itself,
but was cut down by the crew before it could attack.

The fight on the hill ended in a bloodbath as the Chaos Hounds dragged
down the crew of the bolt thrower and although the wounded Skullcrusher
was finally spitted on an Elf spear, the remaning two cut down the whole
of the decimated Sea guard unit.

Turn 3 - Warriors of Chaos

The remnants of the High Elf army bravely faced the onrushing Chaos
Horde but knew their doom was upon them! The Skullcrushers wiped
out the last of the Sea Guard as the Chaos Sorceror cut down the
remnants of the Swordmasters.

The High Elf army was defeated.
