Orcs and Goblins vs. High Elves - Schwarzhammertor

This battle was part of a new campaign - "Schwarzhammertor" (Black Hammer Gate), where Orc, Skaven, High Elf and Dwarf armies attempt to conquer an abandoned Dwarf city. My opponent was unlucky enough to run his smallest army (1250 points) into an Orc and Goblin horde of 2500 points. Did the Elves have a chance?

All units within 6 inches of the mushroom forests were subject to stupidity and rubble and the fallen pillars were treated as dangerous terrain for all models.

Deployment

The Elf noble with the Battle Standard led the Swordmasters
while all the Orc and Goblin characters apart from one Orc
shaman set up with the big Night Goblin Mob, with the Warboss
on the right and the Shaman on the left.
The Elf mage drew Soul Quench and Arcane Unforging and
the Night Goblin Shaman Gift of the Spider God, Itchy Nuisance,
Gork'll Fix It and Sneaky Stabbin'.

The Orc Shaman on his own received Foot of Gork and Gaze
of Mork and the Ork in the big Night Goblin mob took Fists of
Gork and 'Ere we Go.

Turn 1 - Die Vorausgesandte

The Elf mage drew on the power of the winds of magic and cast
Arcane Unmaking on the Black Orc Warboss, but the sorcery was
dispelled with an evil cackle by the Night Goblin Shaman.

The bows of the Shadow Warriors and the Sea Guard opened
up on the Wolf Riders and four goblins fell from their saddles.

Turn 1 - Waaagh Gobrut

As the rest of the Orc advanced, the only survivor of the
Goblin Wolfriders hid behind the fallen pillar and vowed
never to get within range of an elf bow again...

The Orc shaman absorbed too much Waaagh power from
125 excited Goblins and cast Foot of Gork with irresistable
force. Gork's aim was unfortunately off as his foot missed
the Swordmasters by a wide margin and the resulting magical
explosion killed two Goblins before the energies dissipated.

The Goblin Artillery and shooting was more effective - although
one rock and a screaming Goblin went wide, another stone killed
six Swordmasters and a Doom Diver completely wiped out the
Shadow Warriors.

Poisoned arrows from the Night Goblins cut down four more
Swordmasters.

Turn 2 - Die Vorausgesandte

Seeing a vision of their doom and determined to sell their
lives dearly, the Swordmasters charged at the Trolls but
were unfortunately too far away and a brave elf stumbled
and fell over a pile of rubble, breaking his neck.
The Elf mage's attempt to cast Soul Quench on a Pump
Wagon was dispelled and there wasn't enough power left
to sucessfully cast Arcane Unmaking.

Arrows from the Sea Guard thudded into the Pump Wagon,
killing a few Snotlings but otherwise not damaging the war
machine.

Turn 2 - Waaagh Gobrut

Ignoring the commands of the Warboss, the Trolls succumbed
to their imbecilic natures and stumbled forward a few paces,
wondering what the noise going on around them was all about.
The small Night Goblin mob, just far enough away from the
ominous Warboss, decided to try and win the battle all on
their own and charged the nearest Elf regiment but after
they realised they were attempting to attack High Elf Swordmasters
on their own the charge ground quickly to a halt!

Ignoring the drooling trolls, the crew of the Snotling Pump
Wagon pumped furiously and steered their war machine
directly at the Elf Chariot.
The Night Goblin shaman quickly cast Itchy Nuisance onto the
Elf Spears, reducing their initiative and movement to 1, before
miscasting Gift of the Spider God onto the Night Goblins. The
resulting magical feedback wounded both the Orc Shamans
but the sniggering Night Goblin remained unharmed!

A rock from the Stone Thrower killed 7 furiously scratching
Spearelves as the other war machine malfunctioned - its
furiously swearing crew attempted to repair it but it would
take no further part in the battle. One Doom Diver crashed
into the Lion Chariot, damaging the machine as another catapult
blew itself spectacularly apart in a shower of splinters and bits
of dead Goblin!

The massed bowfire of the Night Goblin mob proved absolutely
devastating as all of the remaining Swordmasters and the High
Elf Battle Standard Bearer were scythed down in a hail of
poisoned arrows.

The impact of the Pump Wagon smashed the Lion Chariot to
splinters as the deranged Snotlings overran through the remains
of the once proud High Elf war machine.

Turn 3 - Die Vorausgesandte

Still scratching frantically, the Elf Spears shuffled back a few
paces - but could they move far away enough to escape the
Mangler Squigs?

The Elf mage drew on the power of the Trickster's Shard to
frustrate his cackling opponent but his mastery of the magical
arts failed him as he couldn't channel enough power to cast a
boosted Soul Quench.

The archery of the Sea Guard was equally ineffective, failing to
damage the second Pump Wagon.

Turn 3 - Waaagh Gobrut

A few Night Goblins in the big mob started to push and shove
each other, believing the battle was already won, until the
Black Orc Warboss bellowed "I'm not 'avin any of that!" and
hacked his way indiscriminately through the squabbling
greenskins, leaving two headless corpses in his wake!
The cowed survivors decided to behave - for now!

Suddenly noticing the Elves in front of them, the Trolls came
to their senses again and charged the Sea Guard, who fired
a disciplined volley at the ravening monsters which only
succeeded in angering the Trolls more.

Both Pump Wagons surged towards the Elves, the first
crashing into the Mage and the other coming to a halt just
in front of the Sea Guard.

One of the Mangler Squigs ripped through the Elf Spears,
leaving seven mangled (what else?) bodies on the ground.
The remaining elves panicked and ran blindly towards the
Night Goblins, only to be all killed by a swathe of
black-fletched arrows.

As the Pump Wagon drove directly over the mage, leaving
nothing but a crushed body behind it, the Sea Guard levelled
their spears as one and the Trolls were hit 21 times. Unfortunately,
the spears only managed to penetrate their tough flesh six times
and five of the wounds healed instantly as the torn flesh re-knit
before the Elves' disbelieving eyes! The roaring trolls tore apart
12 Elves and the rest ran for their lives with the Trolls only a
few paces behind them.

Turn 4 - Die Vorausgesandte

Knowing that all was lost but determined to protect their
honour, the Sea Guard rallied and levelled their spears at
the Trolls.

Turn 4 - Waaagh Gobrut

Unbelievably, the Night Goblins again began to scrap under
the glaring eyes of their warboss. "Didn't yer get enuff last
time?" he roared and two more heads joined the growing
pile at his feet. The remaining Night Goblins all tried to get
as far away from his as possible while remaining in (mostly)
ordered ranks, plotting revenge in their black hearts!

The Trolls charged into the remnants of the Sea Guard (in
the heat of the battle I hadn't realised that the Trolls were
way too far away from the Warboss, but they managed to
squeak their Stupidity test with a very lucky 3. However, to
be honest, the Pump Wagons would have had the job covered).

The grim elves managed to kill one Troll before the rest were
ripped apart. In terrible pain, the last Elf blacked out as he
heard the slobbering Trolls begin to feast on his fallen comrades...

The Orcs had won!

Waaaagh!

This battle was pretty much a foregone conclusion and it is
very difficult to think about how my opponent could have fought
it better. He was unlucky to not get even one spell through and with
few missile troops himself had no answer against my gunline.

The next battle will be different though, I'm going up against 2500
points including a very big dragon! Will the Boyz be up to the
challenge???

Deployment

The Doombull and the Gorebull formed up with the rest of the
Minotaurs while the Savage Orc Great Shaman led the Savage
Orc mob.

The Doombull received Laniph's Caress, the Savage Orc Great
Shaman Glittering Robe, Fireball, Hand of Gork, Foot of Gork,
Fists of Gork and Brain Bursta.

The Goblin Shaman received Itchy Nuisance and Sneaky Stabbin'
The campaign rules allowed for one unit to consume a keg of beer
before the battle - they would then be affected by the Stubborn
and Stupidity rules. In a fit of madness (maybe I had had some
of the beer myself) I gave the beer to the Night Goblins (Ld 5???
What was I thinking of???)

Turn 1 - Morkhors Stamm

The Beastman army advanced up to the Monoliths and the hill.

Turn 1 - Waaagh Vuurk

With a spiteful battle cry the Goblin chariot charged directly
at the Ungor Raiders, who fled rather than face the charge on
their own. Undeterred, the chariot crashed into the Tuskgor
chariot next to the Minotaurs. The Tuskgor and the Gor
managed to severely damage the Goblin war machine but the
impact and the attacks of the crew and wolves completely
destroyed the Beastman chariot! The crew joyously overran
into the Ungor who fled off the field.

The Great Shaman tried to cast Foot of Gork but there wasn't
enough Waaagh energy to power the spell.

Turn 2 - Morkhors Stamm

The Beastman army moved to the left in an attempt to outflank
the Orcs.

Turn 2 - Waaagh Vuurk

The beer that the Night Goblins had been liberally consuming
before the battle finally got the better of them and they were
only able to stumble forward a few paces singing drunkenly.

The rest of the army moved to encircle the Beastmen as the
Night Goblin shaman cast Itchy Nuisance on the Minotaurs,
reducing their movement by half.

Turn 3 - Morkhors Stamm

Looking over his shoulder at the Mangler Squigs, the Doombull
drank his Toughness Potion, bellowed a challenge and charged
directly at one, preparing to meet his destiny! He chopped down
the Squigs whose death throes failed to harm his magically
enhanced flesh. The Gorebull also left the other Minotaurs and
faced off against the chariot.

Turn 3 - Waaagh Vuurk

The Squigs charged the Ungor Raiders and triggered a trap,
but although one Squig died they still reached their fooes.
The Savage Orcs triggered another trap but none were harmed.
The other Mangler Squigs rampaged through the Doombull but
were only able to wound him once before stopping just short
of the Minotaurs.

The Shaman raised his arms to the heavens, screamed out an
invocation and the mighty foot of Gork descended on the
Minotaurs! Four were killed outright and one was severely
wounded. Gork then slipped up can came close to crushing
the Goblin Battle Standard Bearer and the Night Goblin
Shaman, but He regained control at the last second and His
foot just missed them.

Undeterred by his narrow escape, the Night Goblin cast
Itchy Nuisance on the Minotaurs again.

Although the Ungor were able to kill one Squig the others swarmed
over them without breaking step and followed up directly into the
furiously scratching Minotaurs!

Turn 4 - Morkhors Stamm

Both Tuskgor chariots charged the mass of Squigs and
10 of the cave dwellers were crushed by the impact. Eight
more died to the attacks of the Beastmen before the Squigs
took their revenge, killing all the remaining Minotaurs and
severely wounding their champion and almost destroying
both chariots.

The Doombull attempted to cast the Caress of Laniph on the
Goblin Battle Standard Bearer but the dark sorcery was dispelled.

Turn 4 - Waaagh Vuurk

The Night Goblins, in a moment of sobriety, moved forward
towards the fighting as the Savage Orcs charged the Tuskgor
Chariot.

The Savage Orc shaman cast Brain Bursta at the Doombull
but his armour saved him from any damage. The Night Goblin
shaman once again cast Itchy Nuisance onto the Minotaur
champion.

The Beastmen killed two Squigs but the rest wiped out all
of the units in combat with them before turning to face
the Doombull.

Turn 5 - Morkhors Stamm

The Doombull charged the Squigs, killing 8 of the monsters
and their handlers for no wounds in return!

Turn 5 - Waaagh Vuurk

The Night Goblins relapsed into their drunken stupor and
staggered forward a few paces with silly grins on their faces.
They really should have stuck to their mushrooms!

Gork's foot descended again and severely wounded the Gorebull,
but Gork slipped up once more and this time His foot came down
squarely onto the Goblin Battle Standard Bearer and the Night
Goblin Shaman. To his utter disgust however my opponent rolled
two ones to wound - original quote - "They must have slipped
between the toes!"

Another Brain Bursta was dispelled.

The Doombull killed 8 more Goblins who (at least for now) still
had the advantage of numbers and remained in the fight.

Turn 6 - Morkhors Stamm

The Gorebull charged direclty at the remaining Squigs and their
handlers and killed every single Night Goblin. With their handlers
dead, the remaining Squigs ran amok, killing three Savage Orcs
but totally failing to wound the Minotaurs!

Turn 6 - Waaagh Vuurk

The Night Goblins finally noticed the Minotaur characters
in front of them and charged in a spirit of drunken invincibility
(they failed the animosity roll) but fell well short (luckily for them!)

Both fanatcs came out but the Goblins were too far gone to
push them very hard and they went nowhere near the
Minotaurs. All attempts at magic were miscast, dispelled or failed
to wound.

The battle was at an end and although the Doombull and the
Gorebull were still standing, their army lay dead around them
and the Orcs had won the day!

Waaagh!

Final result - 15:05 to the Orcs.

A few points from this battle:

I found the Doombull and Gorebull incredibly difficult to wound,
let alone kill. Doombull - Toughness 5, 5 wounds and a re-rollable
1+ armour save who shrugged off two Mangler Squigs; Gorebull -
Toughness 5, 4 wounds, a 3+ Armour Save and a 4+ Ward Save.
Next time I will have to bring a couple of industrial strength
tin-openers...

Squigs are great but incredibly fragile. Having the two Ungor
chariots kill ten with impact hits on the charge didn't help, but
even then the unit (50-strong) would have been wiped out by
the end of the battle anyway.

Gork's Foot rocks. It doesn't always come off but when it stomps,
it's target stays stomped - with the exception of a couple of
slippery goblins!

Until next time.....
